The Best In-Flight Comedy Films

Now that everyone has iPads and tablets you no longer have to endure the boredom of the usual in-flight entertainment when you go on holiday. Re-runs of Only Fools and Horses for 3 hours can wear a little thin! It’s good to keep things fairly light-hearted when picking a film to watch on your flight, Shindler’s List is hardly likely to get you in that holiday mood and you don’t want to embarrass yourself by drying uncontrollably in public after watching ‘Marley and Me’ for the 12th time. Here are a few suggestions of good comedy films that will keep you entertained for a few hours; just try not to laugh too loud and annoy your fellow passengers…

Dumb and Dumber - comedy filmDumb & Dumber

This is a classic. Starring Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels as Harry and Lloyd, 2 hapless friends who give up their dream of opening a worm farm to drive across the country in search of Lloyds ‘true love’, Mary and return a suitcase to her that she abandoned at an airport.  Little do Harry and Lloyd know that the case is actually full of ransom money after Mary’s husband was kidnapped and they are being followed by the criminals that want their cash. No matter how many times I watch this it still has me in hysterics.

Anchorman - comedy filmAnchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

If you haven’t seen Anchorman you must have been living under a rock for the last 9 years (yes, it really did come out in 2004!) The sequel is due for release later this year but I’m not sure that anything can top this tale of Ron Burgundy, 70s TV Anchorman and lathario. Will Ferrel plays this part perfectly and his news team all add something to the party. My personal favourite scene is Jack Black’s cameo as the angry motorcyclist that boots Ron’s beloved do Baxter off a bridge. There are many other classic moments in this brilliant film.

The Campaign - comedy filmThe Campaign

I only came across this film by chance as Virgin Airlines were showing it when I fly to Orlando earlier this year (OK, so some airlines have good in-flight entertainment!) It’s another Will Ferrell film with him starring as congressman Cam Brady. Zach Galifanakis stars as Cam’s rival candidate in the election, Marty Huggins. Cam’s love of fast cars, booze and women is in stark contrast to Marty’s love of Pugs and Jesus which makes for hilarious viewing. N.B Also watch ‘Talledega Nights’ if you like this!

Planes, Trains and Automobiles - comedy filmPlanes, Trains & Automobiles

This is an 80s classic directed by John Hughes, a legend of 80s films. Steve Martin and John Candy star as two strangers, Neal Page and Del Griffith that are thrown together by their need to get home for Thanksgiving. Del is a shower curtain ring salesman and all round big mouth and Neal is in no mood to listen to him blabber away as they drive cross country together. An absolutely brilliant film that reminds you what a top actor John Candy was (and that Steve Martin did some great films before ‘Cheaper by the Dozen!’)
