Fuengirola is an increasingly popular holiday destination. Fuengirola’s impressive promenade is lined with Chiringuitos, cafes, restaurants and shops which are bordered by superb beaches. The promenade fulfils every holidaymaker’s expectation of a beach holiday and satisfies every requirement when it comes to having fun in the sun.
Beyond this initial layer though lies the real heart of Fuengirola. The centre of which is the Plaza de la Constitution whose centrepiece is a stunning white church. The Plaza can be found by many different routes but the most obvious is via the promenade. Walk along the sea front until you come to Maxy’s Cafe and turn up the side street. You are immediately transported to a far more authentic ambience.
If it is another hot day and you can’t wait to until you get to the plaza then make sure you stop off at Taberna Plaza Vieja. Here you will be treated to a warm welcome, fine wines and good food. You can sit outside around the Huge Oak wine barrels and watch the world go by.
Continuing up the street you will pass the Tabaco Estamco Luque shop. Even if you don’t smoke and drink it is well worth a look and if you do you will be spoilt for choice.
Casa Roberto Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in fuengirola, is your next landmark. Casa Roberta, prides itself on its meat and fish dishes. The theme is fresh fish and golf. There thousands of golf clubs and putters hanging from the ceiling and memorabilia up on the walls. A 3 course menu is just 15 Euros.
As you corner Barclays Bank, which has a handy ATM, you will be greeted by the main Plaza. After buying your partner a bunch of flowers from the stall you can take a seat out on the terrace of La Plaza bar. Here the glasses are ice cold and the Spanish Omelettes that resemble cup cakes are not to be missed. From the terrace you can enjoy the architecture of the tall buildings that make up the square as well as the impressive monument and ornate church.
From here you can have your pick of the local bars and eateries. For drinks around the main plaza we can recommend the Dry Martini Bar, this is the bar to be seen in. There is a whole range of drinks but Gin is the speciality. The next watering hole to try is the Funky Lolas bar which gives a superb elevated position over the Plaza and has live bands. Avoid the house wine though.
If the shopper in you is bursting to get out then the top of the plaza opens up onto a street lined with all the best retail shops.
