Benalmadena is the perfect family holiday resort. Clean beaches, a bustling marina and shops and restaurants galore. It also has one of the most well-known and exciting attractions on the Costa del Sol…the Teleferico Cable Car.
The cable cars opened in 2003 and they have proven to be a popular attraction amongst tourists who want to experience the thrilling 15 minute ride up to the peak of Mount Calamorro, at more than 771 metres altitude. You can see part of the cable car route as you drive down the main coastal road from Malaga Airport as the cars climb directly over this. As such, it has become one the best known sights on the coast.
To catch the cable cars you need to get to Explanada del Tivoli in Benalmadena. For full details of public transport options and a map click here. From late March to early July the cable cars are open from 11:00 to 19:00 every day. Over the summer months they are open from 10:00 daily and the closing times vary, but they tend to run until later in the evening as they can get very busy. During the winter the cars run from 11:00 to 17:00 daily but please always check before turning up as weather conditions can affect whether the cars run or not; if it’s very windy they will be closed.
Each car fits a maximum of 4 people and children under 3 go free. You can buy tickets for the cable cars and save yourself a few Euros if you visit website here. If you buy online an adult return ticket is €11.90 and children over 3 pay €9.50.
Once you reach the peak of Mount Calamorro you can take in some of the very best views of the Costa del Sol. On a clear day you can see as far as Gibraltar, and even the African coast. There are well signposted look out points all around the peak so that you can take in incredible views from every angle. The peak is also a starting point for six hiking routes through the Sierra de Benalmadena, so get your hiking boots on!
Another fantastic attraction at the peak is the Jardin de Las Aguilas, or the ‘Garden of Eagles’ Birds of Prey exhibition which is on each day at 13:00 and 16:30. The birds of prey arena sits at the peak and makes the show even more impressive as you watch these huge birds swooping and gliding around the arena. Some of the species you can expect to see include the Bald Eagle, Eurasian Eagle-owl and the Harris Hawk. The show is educational and entertaining; sure to be a hit with all the family.
There are three options of places to eat at the cable cars; a main cafeteria at the entrance to the attraction, the Barranco Kiosk which will see just as you get out at the peak, and La Cima Snack Bar that has great views down the mountain. All these options serve drinks, ice creams, snacks and fast food options.
