Everyone knows that once the sun starts shining in the UK (on those rare occasions it makes an appearance) talk turns to which festival you will be attending over the summer. Glastonbury is back this year and there are hundreds of other festivals ranging from small independent weekends to huge commercial events like V-Festival. But imagine not having to worry about getting covered in mud or spending the day getting soaked in a field soggy field in the UK… There are now lots of festivals worldwide that you can go to and Spain is starting to compete with the UK for the choice of festivals on offer. So why not pack your bikini and check out one of these events for a change this year…
Primavera Sound, Barcelona – May 22nd– May 26th
Primavera Sound is returning to its Barcelona site for the 7th year. This festival attracts around 60,000 visitors each year. Performances mainly take place in the Parque del Forum but smaller performances also take part in other locations and some of these are even free. This year the line up includes Blur, The Wu-Tang Clan, The Vaccines and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
Territorios Sevilla, Seville – May 17th – May 19th
Territorios Sevilla is a small festival with 15,000 capacity that takes place in the beautiful gardens of the Monasterio de la Cartuja, the home of the Andalusian Arts Centre. Tickets for the 2 days are available for an amazing 22 Euros at the moment. The line up has some popular Spanish bands and DJs but the headliners are huge names in international dance; Fatboy Slim and 2ManyDJs. So, if you want to dance the night away in stunning surroundings and also experience a bit f Spanish culture this is the festival for you.
Sonar Festival, Barcelona – June 13th – June 15th
Sonar Festival is one of the biggest weekends in the festival calendar. Attracting a hip crowd, it is the place to be seen especially as this year is the 20th anniversary for the festival. With an 80,000 capacity it is also one of the largest festivals in Spain. The line up this year is an eclectic mix of pop, indie and dance acts with names such as Pet Shop Boys, Two Door Cinema Club, Soulwax and Jurassic 5 heading the bill. You will not be disappointed!
Benicassim, Valencia – July 18th – July 21st
Established in 1995, Benicassim is one of the most established and largest festivals in the Spanish calendar. 50,000 people flock to Valencia for this mammoth festival each year. The location is actually in between Valencia and Barcelona so you can take in both of these great cities while you are over in Spain. You can also camp at Benicassim so if you want to fry in a tent in the middle of July go for it; if not then get your accommodation sorted fast as places get booked up quickly over the weekend. The line up for 2013 includes Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Dizzee Rascal, Primal Scream, Everything Everything and Queens of the Stone Age. The £150 weekend ticket price is reasonable compared to Glastonbury’s hefty £205.
Arenal Sound, Burriana, Castellon – August 1st – August 4th
Burriana is located about 50km from Valencia and this festival takes place on the beautiful Arenal Beach. This large festival welcomes 80,000 guests over the 4 day weekend and you can also camp here. It’s a well organised event with a great line up and loads of beautiful, tanned people partying it up on the beach from dawn until dusk, what’s not to like! The line up this year includes The Editors, White Lies, The Kooks, Chase and Status and The Maccabees.
