If you’re searching for a villa holiday this summer, then you couldn’t choose a better place to visit than the Costa del Sol. The Costa has everything: fine and consistently reliable weather, great food and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. If anything you’ll probably be spoilt for choice as there are so many wonderful destinations to visit. If you’re looking for the perfect holiday destination that offers both the convenience of easy access to the coast along with peace and relaxation, then you might think about visiting Benahavis, one of the Costa del Sol’s loveliest destinations.
Benahavis is a delightful mountain village located 7km from the coast and situated between Marbella, Estepona and Ronda. Apart from the breath-taking scenery, Benahavis is renowned for its restaurants. It’s known as the ‘dining room of the Costa del Sol’ for good reason. The choice and variety of cuisine on offer is exceptional and unparallelled. Above everything else though, you have to say that what sets Benahavis apart from other Costa del Sol destinations are the spectacular mountain and sea views.
The Benahavis municipality comprises about 145 km2 and the medium altitude is 150 meters. The climate is Mediterranean, with a medium temperature of 17º Celsius, and the registered population in 2011 was 5,486 inhabitants. Benahavis is located on the Southern face of the Serrania de Ronda Mountain Range, and its terrain is bisected by the Rivers Guadalmina, Guadaiza and Guadalmanza. Explore slightly further afield and you’ll discover areas of great natural and historic interest within the boundaries of El Cerro del Duque, Daidin and the Montemayor Castle. If that’s not enough to tempt you, it’s worth remembering that you’re only a 5 minute drive away from the Costa; the home of some of Europe’s finest blue flag beaches.
If your idea of fun isn’t idling by the pool all day, then you can always get out and about in the region. If you like walking, then you’ll be spoilt for choice. Take to the mountain tracks on the outskirts of Benahavis, and soak up the marvellous views. From Montemayor Castle you’ll get a stunning view of the whole coastline stretching from Marbella to Gibraltar. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous you can always try your hand at free climbing. Head up to the Las Angosturos Gorge at the entrance to the village and have a go at one of the 60 climbing routes. There’s also plenty to do for cycling fans. The winding road up to Benahavis is very popular with cyclists and mountain biking fans for understandable reasons, as is the Ronda road. If you want to keep fit and enjoy some of the most spectacular views on the Costa del Sol at the same time, then Benahavis could be the place for you this summer.
If you prefer a more gentle and relaxed form of exercise, then take a trip down to the Gran Hotel Benahavis which is located close to the river. Here you’ll find a multi-sports complex with swimming pools, tennis and paddle tennis courts, a municipal gym and a full-size football pitch. All of the facilities are available year-round except the swimming pool which is only open between June and September.
